92-94/100 - The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru contains 50% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in 45% new oak. There is a sense of sumptuousness on the nose of pure dark cherry, cranberry and tangerine. The palate is well balanced with grippy tannins, a fine bead of acidity and satisfying tension and vivacity on the edgy, stony finish. This is an excellent Charmes-Chambertin. - Neal Martin, Vinous

17/20 - Cask sample. Bright crimson. Quite an intense nose. Round nose and then crunchy fruited. Good attack. Quite forward. - Jancis Robinson MW

93/100 - Bichot owns a 0.17ha parcel of Chambertin at the top of the hill, which it bottles under the Domaine du Clos Frantin label. The fruit is given a slow fermentation in wood fermenters and is aged 14-18 months in cask (70% new). The result marks the wood, but there is also a concentrated plummy fruit character on the nose. Firm, focused and not over-extracted, this is a worthy effort indeed. - Charles Curtis MW, Decanter

Domaines Albert Bichot, established in Beaune in 1831 by Bernard Bichot, is a historic Burgundy Maison that has continuously impressed wine enthusiasts. Today, under the leadership of managing director Alberic Bichot, the business has experienced a revitalisation, with a focus on a series of domaines that showcase the diverse terroirs of the region.

Charmes-Chambertin is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's lesser-known grand cru sites. Planted with Pinot Noir, it produces some of the softer red wines from Gevrey-Chambertin's stretch of grand cru vineyards.

The soils in the vineyard are well-drained and stony, with a thin layer of pebble-strewn chalky topsoil over a deep, rocky base. The percentage of clay reduces slightly towards the higher edge of the site, giving way to drier, looser limestone.

Due to subtle topographical changes along the slopes, much of Charmes-Chambertin faces a few points north of east, meaning that its vines are not so fully exposed to the morning sunshine. This contributes to the fresher, lighter style of its wines, which are best consumed at an earlier age than those of its neighbours.
