This is one of the newest wines in the renowned Azienda Agricola G.D. Vajra portfolio. Sourced from vines grown in the Coste de Rose cru around Barolo, this wine is dominated by plenty of fresh and fragrant fruit. There’s an energy and delicacy here, with notes of rose petal, pomegranate, and then raspberry fruit. A simply stunning iteration of Barolo.

94/100 - With fruit from above the village of Barolo, the G.D. Vajra 2018 Barolo Coste di Rose shows a large aromatic scope and ample substance. This vineyard is characterized by very high density Diano sandstone (typical of the area), which explains the wine’s bigger sensorial impact. Its texture is velvety and smooth, and the wine offers lots of purple and red fruits with soft earth and perfumed flower. The vintage is open knit and broad in scope, perhaps lacking some of the brilliant focus you get in the cooler years. This wine was first produced in 2015. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

92/100 - The 2018 Barolo Coste di Rose is a delicate, understated Barolo that will need a bit of time to fully emerge. There's lovely purity to the fruit here, but also some angular contours that need to resolve. The 2018 is a mid-weight wine in the style of the vintage, and yet there is fine balance. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

First day: Lustrous mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. A firmer nose than the Albe of the same vintage and still closed with notes only of spice emerging from the glass. Hints of rich cherry. Gentle and concentrated palate with plenty of firm, sandy tannins and with plenty of concentrated fruit that is still a little reluctant to come out. Needs more time.
Second dayA little bit backward, but with a peppery tingle. Raspberries with hints of malt. Brooding concentration. Linear red fruit on the palate but not austere and with bags of powdery tannins. Long but closes up. Certainly refreshing and tactile. - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com

92/100 - Very clean red-berry fruit on the nose, together with citrus and cedar notes. Medium body with fine-grained tannins and a tight bead of fruit at the end. Sustainable. Best from 2024. - James Suckling

Coste di Rose is one of the most approachable crus of Barolo, with roses and a floral dominated nose combined with marasca cherry and hints of liquorice and mint.
A very elegant and pleasurable structure that flows gracefully on the palate with a lingering and sapid finish.

The Vajra family’s parcel in Coste di Rose in Barolo are gorgeously located on the top of the site, around 310m above sea level. The soil is dominated by pure Arenaria di Diano, a sandstone that delivers distinctive floral aromatics and a salty minerality. This cru is one of Barolo’s best-kept secrets, being located right in between Cannubi and Bussia, yet slightly off the beaten paths.

Fruit is picked usually around the third week of October. Vinification occurs in custom-designed vertical tank, with gentle punch down and rinsing of the cap. Maceration lasts 40 to 50 days on average.
